Take part in a solar observing day, comment on the West Cornwall designation proposal and visit an exhibition with a difference

The shortest night is nearly upon us and there are plenty of space-themed activities for your diary…

Come Along to a Solar Observing Day – this Saturday!

In celebration of the summer solstice, Caradon Observatory is holding a FREE solar observing day at the observatory on Saturday 22nd June. Doors will be open 10am-3pm for you to stop by and have a look at the sun safely through a telescope. They’ll have both a Hydrogen-alpha solarscope and a white light telescope set up. Access and parking at the observatory is limited so if you are planning on popping in please message them. For those that cannot make it they’ll post some live solar images onto their Facebook page. If it’s cloudy or raining they will postpone the event so please keep an eye on https://en-gb.facebook.com/caradonobservatory/. Caradon Observatory can be found near Upton Cross, PL14 5BQ and contacted on 01579 364044. The observatory sits within the Buffer Zone for the Bodmin Moor International Dark Sky Landscape designation established in 2017.

West Cornwall Dark Sky Designation Consultation – have your say!

A community-led partnership supported by Cornwall Council is working on a proposal for west Cornwall to become an International Dark Sky Reserve. The partnership is keen to hear your views before they proceed with an application to the International Dark-Sky Association.

You are invited to drop into a consultation event on Wednesday 17th July 2019 between 4pm and 7pm at St John’s Hall, Alverton Street, Penzance TR18 2QW or email the Partnership via darksky@cornwall.gov.uk to provide your feedback. Responses can also be sent to West Cornwall Dark Sky Partnership, c/o Cornwall Council, Pydar House, Pydar Street, Truro TR1 1XU. You are welcome to call me on 01872 224309 if you have any queries.

The main purpose of the designation is to protect the amazing quality of the dark night sky and it would be managed in a similar way to Bodmin Moor’s International Dark Sky Landscape designation with a core area and a buffer zone to the east which would include Penzance and St Ives.

For more information please see the attached leaflet, Cornwall Council’s dark sky webpage and the Dark Skies for West Cornwall Facebook page. A poster is also attached in case you would like to help promote the drop-in consultation event.
